The Trainer Assessor Award is the qualification that enables you to deliver and assess SLSGB qualifications and awards.
- Equips you with the knowledge and skills to train candidates to a high standard and competently assess SLSGB qualifications
- Combines two days of classroom-based training with mentored delivery and assessment of your first courses
- Teaches training principles and how to apply them to your area of expertise — not how to deliver a specific award
- A pathway to delivering a wider range of SLSGB qualifications or progressing to become a Trainer Assessor Trainer
Who is this award for?
SLSGB members aged 18 or over who hold or have previously held the award they wish to deliver, and who are members of an affiliated surf lifesaving club or accredited training centre. Please note that all courses delivered as an SLSGB Trainer Assessor must be delivered under one of these umbrellas — you can no longer deliver courses as an individual TA. The award is valid for 2 years, with a SLSGB Educator Update required every two years to maintain it.
What is covered during the award?
The Trainer Assessor Award develops the knowledge and skills needed to plan, deliver and assess quality training sessions for SLSGB qualifications. At its core is a focus on:
- Your role, responsibilities and boundaries as a Trainer Assessor in a Surf Life Saving environment
- Appropriate teaching and learning approaches for Surf Life Saving
- Planning, delivering and evaluating inclusive and motivating training sessions
- Safeguarding and protecting children and vulnerable adults in a Surf Life Saving environment
- Registering candidates and courses and marking assessments online through the SLSGB systems
- Assessing and minimising risk in an aquatic environment
- The principles and practices of assessment
- Demonstrating competence in SLSGB session delivery through mentored training and assessment
How is the assessment completed?
You will be assessed by an SLSGB Trainer Assessor Trainer across two classroom-based days (approximately 9am–5pm each day), with assessment continuing through mentored delivery of your first courses. Assessment methods include observation of practice, written and oral questioning, online tests and professional discussion. Following the course you will be signed off as a probationary Trainer Assessor and supported by a Mentor who will observe your training and assessment delivery and determine when you are ready to become a fully qualified Trainer Assessor. Units assessed include:
- Safeguarding (Online)
- Aquatic Safety Management (Online)
- Preparing, delivering and evaluating education sessions
- Principles and practices of assessment
- Awards Administration
- Mentored Training Delivery and Assessment
Is prior experience required for this award?
To complete the Trainer Assessor Award you will need to:
- Be an existing member of SLSGB
- Hold or have previously held the award you wish to deliver
- Be a member of an affiliated surf lifesaving club or accredited training centre
- Complete the Safeguarding and Aquatic Safety Management online tests
- Complete a course workbook throughout the two days of training
- Log 10 hours of SLSGB Training through mentring
Please note that if you hold a teaching qualification or Trainer Assessor qualification from another governing body, you may be able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
