The Level 1 Assistant Coach Award is the first step into coaching within the Surf Life Saving environment.
- Introduces the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to coach safely and ethically in a Surf Life Saving setting
- Equips you to actively support a more senior Level 2 coach in the delivery of pre-prepared sessions
- A focused one-day course combining theory and practical land-based activities
- A clear pathway towards becoming a Level 2 Lead Coach for SLSGB
Who is this award for?
SLSGB members aged 16 or over who want to begin coaching in a Surf Life Saving environment, working under the supervision of a more experienced coach. The award is valid for 2 years, with a SLSGB Coach Update required every two years to maintain it.
What is covered during the award?
The Level 1 Assistant Coach Award provides a thorough introduction to safe and ethical coaching practice in a Surf Life Saving environment. At its core is a focus on:
- The roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a Surf Life Saving Sports coach, and how to apply these under supervision
- The principles of creating and maintaining an equitable and safe coaching environment
- Preparing, delivering and evaluating coaching sessions, including equipment and facilities, and supporting participant behaviour and performance
- Safeguarding — giving children and young people the best possible experience and opportunities in Surf Life Saving
- The basic principles of Health and Safety Executive good practice as they apply to coaching
How is the assessment completed?
You will be assessed by an SLSGB Level 2 Coach or Coach Trainer across a single 8-hour day (9am–5pm), using a variety of methods including observation of practice, written and oral questioning, online tests and professional discussion. You will also be required to complete a course workbook throughout the day. Topics assessed include:
- Introduction to Coaching
- Coaching Fundamentals
- Preparing, delivering and evaluating coaching activities
- Safeguarding
- Aquatic Safety Management
Is prior experience required for this award?
No prior experience is required, but you will need to be a valid member of SLSGB
