The Inshore Rescue Boat Driver Award is the qualification that demonstrates the standard required to operate an Inshore Rescue Boat in a reactive rescue.

Who is this award for?Â
Current SLSGB members aged 17 or over who hold a valid SLSGB Lifeguard qualification (or recognised national/international equivalent) and a current SLSGB Inshore Rescue Boat Crew qualification. All pre-requisites must be in place before undertaking any Power Craft training. The award is valid for 24 months, with annual proficiency testing required thereafter.
What is covered during the award?
The Inshore Rescue Boat Driver Award develops the technical and practical skills needed to launch, crew, operate and recover an Inshore Rescue Boat safely and effectively in a rescue situation. At its core is a focus on:
- The technical and general knowledge required to operate an Inshore Rescue Boat as a Driver
- General operations for the launch, crewing and recovery of an Inshore Rescue Boat
- Hazards and surf survival skills specific to IRB Drivers
- Rescue techniques for Inshore Rescue Boat Drivers
- Casualty management and evacuation procedures from an Inshore Rescue Boat
- IRB patrol, search and craft assistance procedures for Drivers
How is the assessment completed?
You will be assessed by a qualified SLSGB Powercraft Trainer Assessor. Assessment is conducted in conditions appropriate to IRB operation in a controlled environment, always maintaining a high level of safety. To complete the award you will need to:
- Submit a completed training log to your Assessor
- Complete verbal questioning from the IRB Manual with a 90% pass mark
- Complete Part A: Theory and Dry Testing
- Complete Part B: Rescue Skills and Wet Testing
- Evidence at least 20 hours afloat in your training log
Is prior experience required for this award?
To complete the Inshore Rescue Boat Driver Award you will need to:
- Be a current member of SLSGB
- Be aged at least 17 on the date of assessment
- Hold a valid SLSGB Lifeguard qualification
- Hold a current SLSGB Inshore Rescue Boat Crew qualification
- Log a minimum of 20 hours of experience, at least 10 of which must be afloat, prior to assessment
