What is covered during the award?
The First Aid Awareness Award provides the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to help in an emergency situation. At its core is a focus on:

  • An introduction to first aid and what it means to be a first responder
  • On-scene risk management — keeping yourself and others safe
  • How and when to call for help, including calling 999
  • Basic adult CPR
  • How to use a defibrillator (AED)
  • Patient survey and the recovery position
  • Basic first aid support for minor wounds and dressings

How is the assessment completed?
Assessment is completed through practical demonstration and verbal questioning during the session.

Is prior experience required for this award?
No prior knowledge or experience is required. This course is designed to be accessible to everyone, whatever your starting point.

Blend of online and practical sessions

Many courses begin with online learning to prepare you for face-to-face assessment and coaching, maximising time spent on practical development

Practical elements are led by qualified SLSGB volunteer trainers at clubs or Accredited Training Centres, ensuring quality support and guidance throughout.

Progressive learning

You’ll work through defined modules that build on each other, combining water safety, first aid, rescue technique and beach environment skills

Recognition and qualification

On successful completion, you’ll achieve nationally recognised awards or qualifications that can support your role in lifesaving, coaching, volunteering or professional lifeguard work
