Community Programmes

Surf Life Saving GB works with partners across the UK to deliver community programmes that promote water safety, improve wellbeing and help people feel more connected.

Through outreach projects, partnerships and local initiatives, we use the power of surf lifesaving to create positive change, supporting individuals and communities both on and off the water.

Together, we deliver programmes that reach new audiences, remove barriers to participation and promote safer relationships with water.

Promoting Health and Wellbeing

Being active around water can have a powerful impact on physical and mental health.

Our community programmes help people:

  • Improve physical fitness and confidence
  • Support positive mental wellbeing
  • Reduce isolation and loneliness
  • Build friendships and social connection

By bringing people together through shared activity, we help strengthen communities and create lasting positive experiences.

Supporting Young People

Many of our programmes focus on helping young people access opportunities they may not otherwise have.

This includes:

  • Engaging young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Building confidence and resilience
  • Developing teamwork and leadership skills
  • Encouraging active, healthy lifestyles

Surf Lifesaving provides a supportive environment where young people can grow, challenge themselves and feel part of something positive.

Bringing Generations Together

Surf Life Saving GB programmes often bring together people of different ages and backgrounds, helping communities connect through shared experiences.

From youth initiatives to programmes supporting older adults, our aim is to create spaces where everyone can:

  • Feel welcome
  • Stay active
  • Learn new skills
  • Build meaningful connections

Improving Access to Water

We are committed to making activities around water more inclusive.

Community programmes support:

  • Access to water-based activity for people with disabilities
  • Inclusive participation opportunities
  • Adapted training and supportive environments

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of water safely and confidently.

Creating Positive Community Impact

Through partnership programmes and local initiatives, Surf Life Saving GB helps:

  • Increase water safety awareness
  • Promote community resilience
  • Encourage volunteering and social action
  • Build safer, healthier communities

Our approach combines practical skills with social impact, helping people feel safer, more connected and more confident in their environment.

“Joining a sports club, community walking club or a leisure centre is a wonderful way to meet new people in the community and to make connections. When local people come together through sport and physical activity, further benefits follow, from increased spending in nearby businesses to improved understanding between communities who might not otherwise meet.”
