In 2025, at Saunton Sands, 14-year-old Oscar McRae demonstrated composure and courage well beyond his years.

A man had been struck on the head by a heavy stand-up paddleboard in large surf. The impact paralysed him, leaving him unable to keep his airway above water. Oscar, already out surfing, witnessed the incident unfold.

Without hesitation, he paddled to the casualty. Recognising the immediate risk to airway and life, Oscar manoeuvred the man onto his board and stabilised his head, maintaining his airway above the water despite challenging surf conditions.

He then signalled clearly for assistance. Fellow club member Neil Phillips spotted the signal and contacted the Coastguard. Oscar continued supporting the casualty until the Appledore lifeboat arrived and transferred him for emergency medical care.

The man spent several days in hospital but gradually regained the use of his limbs — a recovery that may not have been possible without Oscar’s intervention.

Following the rescue, Oscar represented the sport with maturity, engaging with media coverage including the BBC’s Saving Lives at Sea programme, helping highlight the impact of surf lifesaving training.
