Jim Taylor-Ross

Heroes of the Surf Awards
Award: SLSGB Ambassador

Jim Taylor-Ross has dedicated his career to making paddlesport and surf lifesaving safer for all. A former career lifeguard in Cornwall and an international-class kayak and surf ski paddler, Jim turned personal tragedy into lasting positive change within the sport.

Following the loss of a fellow paddler during the Studland outrigger race, Jim pioneered the implementation of GPS trackers for paddlers in Epic Bay ski races, alongside mandatory personal flotation devices and secondary communication systems including VHF radios. He also developed the now widely adopted triangular three-lap race format, creating a safe and inclusive environment for athletes of all abilities while maintaining elite-level competition standards.

Jim has generously shared his safety documentation and race protocols with other events across Sussex and Wales, strengthening safety culture nationally. Beyond event organisation, he has coached GB athletes in ocean and surf ski disciplines and continues to give his time freely to introduce beginners to paddling — not for financial gain, but to grow and safeguard the sport he loves.

His support of the surf lifesaving community has been immense, and tonight we proudly recognise Jim Taylor-Ross as our SLSGB Ambassador.
