Glyn Collen

Heroes of the Surf Awards
Award: Commendation

On what began as a simple coastal walk near Mullion and Polurrian Cove, Glyn Collen demonstrated exactly what it means to live the values of vigilance and service — even when off duty.

Spotting a significant rip current mid-beach, Glyn proactively warned more than ten members of the public about the hazard, advising them to remain in waist-deep water and avoid the rip channel. His preventative approach alone reflects strong situational awareness and commitment to public safety.

When a swimmer was swept off their feet by a wave set and carried out in the rip, Glyn immediately moved to assist. The casualty returned to shore exhausted, collapsed and showed signs of water aspiration. Glyn assessed breathing difficulties, high respiratory rate, elevated pulse and delayed capillary refill — indicators of serious concern.

With no first aid equipment available due to building works at the surf club, Glyn improvised calmly. He positioned the casualty appropriately to aid breathing, monitored vital signs and coordinated transport via beach buggy and private vehicle to Helston Minor Injuries Unit, recognising that immediate escalation was required.

Before leaving the scene, he continued warning beach users about the rip hazard — ensuring no further casualties occurred.

Glyn’s measured clinical judgement, composure and decisive action in a resource-limited environment likely prevented a life-threatening deterioration.

For vigilance, professionalism and calm leadership, we commend Glyn Collen.
