Surf Life Saving GB unites volunteers from all walks of life to save lives, educate communities and strengthen water safety across the UK’s coasts and inland waterways. Our collective impact delivers fewer drownings and accidents, improved wellbeing, stronger communities and vital life skills.
We are a national charity powered by around 10,000 volunteers who patrol beaches, deliver lifesaving training, support community resilience and nurture sport and development opportunities.
Our members range from young people aged 5 through to adults over 100, reflecting a lifelong journey of learning, service and impact.
Surf Life Saving GB volunteers patrol beaches, strengthen community resilience to extreme weather, deliver emergency coastal and flood rescue services and provide frontline water safety education.
Through these collective efforts, we help keep people safer both on our coastlines and inland waterways.
We train and support volunteer patrols that:

Promote safe behaviour on the water

Deliver first aid and preventative interventions
Provide visible support during busy beach periods

Surf Life Saving GB brings people together through local clubs that act as vibrant community hubs. Whether it’s youth development, social support or skills programmes, our clubs help people of all ages build confidence, fitness and water safety skills – making communities stronger and more resilient.
Our approach is inclusive: you can train for fun, challenge yourself or contribute to community safety. Example pathways include:

Nipper sessions for young children (from age 5)

Graduate lifeguard programmes for teens

Flood rescue and terrestrial search training

Community education and beach safety events

Life saving isn’t only a skill — it’s a multi-discipline sport that tests fitness, technique and teamwork, from pool to beach to open water. Competition strengthens ability, improves readiness and brings communities together through shared achievement.

Surf Life Saving GB’s impact is amplified through partnerships with organisations such as HM Coastguard, the RNLI, government bodies, youth agencies and local authorities. These collaborations extend reach, integrate rescue services and promote water safety awareness across the UK.
Our work matters because:
