Junior Lifeguard supported by cottages4you

Junior Lifeguard supported by cottages4you is Surf Life Saving GB’s newest child-centred programme, run by trained and experienced lifesavers at SLSGB Surf Life Saving Clubs and SLSGB Accredited Training Centres nationwide. Aimed at tourists and the local community as well as being a perfect introduction to surf life saving for schools, the programme educates 7-14 year olds about beach and water safety.

Junior Lifeguard is a fun session where children will learn a range of lifesaving skills, giving them a taste of what it takes to be a lifeguard whilst educating them to be safer by the sea.

Information for participants and parents

We believe that Junior Lifeguard is a programme that gives children the tools and knowledge to be safer by the sea, and therefore for parents to feel at ease to allow them to have fun in the water.

During the Junior Lifeguard session children will learn to bodysurf, dolphin dive, paddle a rescue board, identify waves, rip currents and other dangers as well as fun beach activities including ‘beach flags’, a fast and energetic sport event.

The sessions will cater for the ability of the group; the only pre-requisite is that the child must be able to swim 50m unaided.  All coaches are experienced in working with children and have full DBS checks and safeguarding training.

All participants will receive a SLSGB Junior Lifeguard certificate – an SLSGB entry-level award which will enable children to progress onto our Nipper education programme if they’d like to.

You don’t need any equipment to take part, but wetsuits are advised. Your Junior Lifeguard provider will be able to help you if you don’t have your own.

Sessions will be running at the following clubs/beaches (watch this space as we'll be adding more sessions and venues):

Information for schools and youth organisations
Junior Lifeguard is an ideal introduction to surf life saving for schools and youth organisations. It’s a great activity for primary and secondary schools, colleges, summer schools and youth groups.

The programme aims to improve children’s confidence, team work and social skills whilst giving them the opportunity to develop a new fun and healthy sporting interest for life. Junior Lifeguard offers a unique non-traditional activity for schools, which fits perfectly with Government strategies for physical education and sport.

If you are a teacher and interested in delivering Junior Lifeguard at your school, please contact Lauren Turner.

Lifesavers of the future

We value the energy and enthusiasm that young people have and we are working to develop those natural attributes through the SLSGB National Youth Development Group.

The Youth Development Group develops educational programmes for youngsters and the community at large. This involves working with sports coaches, life saving instructors and volunteer helpers to develop inter-generational relationships in communities.

It is vital that we encourage our young people to continue in Surf Life Saving to become the volunteers of the future, running community surf life saving clubs.

The opportunities provided by SLSGB include:

  • An annual Leadership Development Camp
  • A chance to attend the Leadership Development College in Australia
  • Awards, both community and professional including Junior Lifeguard
  • Career opportunities as beach lifeguards
  • Support and personal development in coaching, instruction and leadership

Fundamentals Activities - Resource for Nipper Coaches

All activities in the Fundamentals Activities resource are intended for use by an accredited SLSGB coach only. Do not attempt to carry out these activities without the correct level of supervision. The coach must adhere to the recommendations of the National Safety Guide, which includes completion of a thorough risk assessment prior to commencing any of the activities or exercises indicated in this booklet.

This resource is to be used by coaches delivering Nipper activities who aim to develop generic movement skills through structured fun activities and games. It is recommended that Coaches include such activities in sessions approximately twice a week. These skills for development fit into the first base building block on the SLSGB Life Saver Pathway for Development model.

The Fundamentals Activities Booklet can be purchased by completing a Manual Order Form and sending a cheque for £10 made out to SLSGB.

Fundamentals Skill Log Record – For 7-11 year olds*

This poster style resource is designed to be displayed in your club and a record of achievement for Nippers working through the Fundamentals Activities book with their Coaches.

How it works…

  • Variation 1 activity should be from the Fundamentals Activities booklet
  • Variation 2 should be with participant/group input towards creating and participating in an adapted Fundamentals activity while helping others feel welcome & encouraged
  • Variation 3 should be achieved through a self-set Life saving sport specific goal within a given Fundamental skill for an individual and/or for helping others to develop the given skill point.
